Common Varieties of Mosaic Materials You Can Use:
Glass mosaic tiles come in a variety of sizes and thickness. Difference in tile thickness is the primary concern in mixing glass mosaic tile with ceramic or stone tile. This difference in thickness can provide interesting texture to the surface of a mosaic, and poses no serious problems in most mosaics, but should clearly be avoided in floor mosaics for obvious reasons. Allow space between different thicknesses to build up grout on a mixed media piece.
Venetian or Vitreous Glass Mosaic Tile The most common type of glass mosaic tile is Vitreous or Venetian glass mosaic tile. Vitreous is said to be stone-like in that it is opaque, has a grainy stone-like texture and cuts easily. Venetian glass mosaic tile is similar but smooth and cost a little more. These tiles commonly come in the 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch x 1/8 inch size. Both these tiles comes in Metallic's, Translucent, Glitter, Marble, Iridescent etc.
Glazed or Unglazed Ceramic Tile Found at tile stores or large home improvements chains. These must be broken but are often cheaper that the glass tiles. These will be thicker than glass tiles and much heavier once applied to you surface.
Stained Glass You can cut stained glass sheets into small pieces to use in Mosaic or buy it pre cut.
Marbles, Gemstones & Glass Nuggets Flat backed marbles available in all craft stores, these come in millions of different colors and varieties. Mirror Tiles You can break up small mirrors or purchase pre cut mirror tiles including colored mirror.
Mirror tile comes in all colors. I do not recommend this for outdoors in harsh weather. Moisture can damage the backings of the mirror over time.
Broken China Plates, teapots, cups and saucers The cheapest materials to use. Look at Thrift stores, garage sales or discount chains for inexpensive plates that you can break up. Thickness of the plates will affect the easy of cutting. Thin plates are best; take care when breaking plates into pieces.
Natural Materials Rocks, pebbles, fossils, shells are wonderful to add to any Mosaic project.
Misc. Bits & Pieces to add Buttons, Coins, Costume jewelry, Beach Glass, Old keys, board game pieces broken knickknacks, the ideas are endless.
CAUTION-WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND GLOVES WHEN BREAKING TILE, MIRROR, STAINED GLASS AND BROKEN PLATES
